Okay, so as no one has provided any hints as to where to go, the only thing left is to try alsaconf.

But from what I've been able to ascertain, alsaconf is considered poorly-written and poorly-maintained by the Debian developers, and hence it has been dropped from the Debian distribution (at least in Sid).

Can anyone verify that alsaconf has been deprecated in Debian? If not, in which package will I find it?

I did find alsactl:

westk@canuhold:~$ sudo alsactl init
Unknown hardware: "ICH4" "Analog Devices AD1981A" "AC97a:41445372" "" ""
Hardware is initialized using a guess method

Ah, so now I'm getting an "Unknown hardware" message.

Any clues?

I booted into the DebianLiveCD (i386/KDE), and the sound worked.

I then booted into my regular Debian setup, and the sound did not work.

I then booted back into the LiveCD (without powering off), and the sound did not work.

I then powered off, and then booted into the LiveCD, and the sound worked.

I then booted into my regular Debian setup, and the sound did not work.

Apparently my regular Debian setup is flipping a bit on the sound circuitry itself that requires a power-off to fix. At least, that's the way it seems to me. But I have no clue as to how to track this down further.
