This no longer seems to be the case. A while ago, I happened to boot
into the above kernel, and all was well! IOW, there was no problem
when running the same box with the above kernel.

I'm afraid I cannot explain the contradiction, and I have not had the
time to carefully re-examine the recent test. But, as, to my
knowledge, no-one else has corroborated the alleged misbehaviour, then
it is best to question my original post.

IOW, all is well. Move along. Nothing to see here. Good night
