If the default depth in /etc/X11/xorg.conf is changed
from 24 to 16 direct rendering succeeds. Appears
that among all the applications here, xfce4-terminal
is the only one unable to live without DR.
Two minor problems remain.

drmOpenDevice: open result is -1, (No such device or address)
drmOpenDevice: Open failed
drmOpenByBusid: Searching for BusID pci:0000:00:02.0
drmOpenDevice: node name is /dev/dri/card0
drmOpenDevice: open result is 8, (OK)

Specifying the location of drmDevice might save
X from searching for it and specifying absence of
AIGLX: 3D might also save a little time.
Thanks for the tips, ... p. crawford
