here is how i installed 8.9 on my fresh lenny amd64 install.
#GOTO http://shame.tuxfamily.org/repo/ and add to sources.list
#run the ati install choosing default options.
>sh ati-driver-installer-8-9-x86.x86_64.run

#run
>aticonfig --initial -f
#run
>aticonfig --overlay-type=Xv

#restart
test by opening terminal and running >compiz-manager --replace

if it works you have compiz

go to system>preferences>sessions
add compiz-manaer --replace as a startup program

this will make sure you can log in without compiz from GDM if you get
trouble.

i had lots of trouble with older ati drivers and non shame compiz repo's
but it all works like a charm now,
