Log in on a terminal under eg. F2 (CTL+ALT+F2) as root. And reconfigure
and restart X using:

$ dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg
$ /etc/init.d/gdm restart

A copy of the original xorg.conf is kept with proper date in /etc/X11/

Do not forget to log out of the terminal!

Best,

Rob
