X-server doesn't start after boot-up

i've a debian etch system.. i'm using the grub loader.. immediately after the boot process when the login screen is to take over, instead of the login screen, i get this

this box keeps moving up and down on the screen.. i'm new to linux so dont know how to configure x by myself.. pls help
