Somewhat shamefaced...
Permissions. The log / log directories on the client were owned by root:
an artifact of copying over the old logs (as root) as part of the new
install.
I'd set amandad to be run as root in inted.conf -- that made amcheck
work, but apparently amandad (or somebody) doesn't like that.
Anyway, never mind...
