1) Learn hex(adecimal).  (For interpreting numbers written as hex.) -- 
Wikipedia for a start.
2) Learn the hex codes for ASCII control (and other non-printing) 
characters. -- Wikipedia probably has some information.
3) Learn the binary format they are trying to edit. -- A standard or other 
documentation specific to the format.

It's really only useful in that it is a fairly universal tool, and doesn't 
require complex programs.  It's much better to edit/view in a tool with 
specific support for that binary format.
