not a laptop, this is a Dell desktop, duo Core Intel box. Stays up and
running all the time..

 10:41:14 up 17 days, 16:34,  5 users,  load average: 0.02, 0.08, 0.08

I understand...so you can't reboot in order to load the nv module?
