I did as you suggested, but it did not work.
In an effort to determine why, I ran "dmesg|grep wlan0" which returned
the following:

I then ran command "ifup wlan0", which returned:
ifup: interface wlan0 already configured
So, the interface may be configured, but obviously was not connecting.
I next ran command "ifdown wlan", which returned the following:

So, the only way I can get a wireless connection is by not having the
boot-up process try to establish a connection automatically on boot-up,
but to establish the connection manually after boot-up is completed by
running "ifup wlan0".
Does all the foregoing give anyone any idea why I cannot establish on
boot-up of my Lenovo R61 ThinkPad a good wireless connection?
