As I said in my previous post
does it for me on my debian etch amd64 box. apt/aptitude take care about
taking the right architecture, just like in

deb http://ftp2.de.debian.org/debian/ etch main contrib non-free

for the main debian repository.

You must not set the sub directory yourself.

Yes, I reverted the commened out

deb http://www.debian-multimedia.org etch main

line and its working for me now.  It seems to me that from time to time the line fails, perhaps the site is getting to many requests, etc.  And when it fails for me, it fails for a while then apparently works again.  I usually monitor this list to see if others are reporting problems since I don't want to add to the noise, but after I commented it out, it's been a while since I've been able to update the media apps on my computer and I've been wanting to get flash/olympics and other flash sites and other video formats working better.
