** I can't believe it, but this works perfectly! I put all entries
returned by getent for each of my apt sources in the hosts file, and
now apt works perfectly! So what does this tell us exactly in the
context of what's happened? What could've changed to make this
necessary? It used to work without those in the hosts file.
THANK YOU NN_il_Confusionario - I really appreciate it! I hope this
working tells someone a clue so that I can figure out how to get it to
work WITHOUT those in the hosts file.

Yes, this is the mondo "nuke" option. You boot from the first
recovery disk and enter "nuke" at the prompt. This restores
everything to bare metal - wonderful if it works. It used to work for
me, but a couple of years ago I started having a problem with mondo
recognizing my cdrom. Although it recognizes the media and starts the
mondo application and loads vmlinuz... then ti starts giving error
about not being able to find the cdrom. I have not been able to get
an answer for this on the mondo-devl list. However, I can restore
individual files or directories from the media by using the
mondorestore function. So I have installed a fresh installation of
etch, updated, then installed mondo, then restored /etc, /home, /usr,
and /var using mondorestore and my backup media. With some minor
tweaking, this worked fine previously. This time, my apt started
behaving differently! I haven't been able to find a better
backup/restore strategy that I can understand at my level.

I know this. The only good thing is that the backed-up system was up
to date and the fresh installation was up to date. The way I do it is
the best that I can understand at the moment, and it has worked for me
once before.
Again, thanks so much for your help! I'd still like to hear any
further comments now that you know that putting the getent results in
the hosts file worked.
