you can also do:
ln -s /usr/bin/gcc-4.1 /usr/bin/gcc
/usr/bin/gcc -> /usr/bin/gcc-4.1
that worked for me on the same kernel. I have successfully got it
working on the beta 2.2 and 1.4 versions of vmware. it may not be the
correct Debian way but it got the job done.
