Re: configure internet through a router

I connect to Internet through VPN. I decided to put a router (D-Link
DI-604) to split the connection between several computers. I've
managed to make my Mac iBook to work OK with the new setup. Yet my
laptop with Debian refuses to connect to Internet.
The phenomenology is as follows:

1. I can connect to the router itself at http://192.168.0.1/, I can
establish/break connection between the router and my internet
provider.

2. Whenever I try to connect to the outside it fails. The brouser
(Firefox) says: "... could not be found. Please check the name and try
again."

It might not be able to resolve domain names. Can you ping an outside IP address? Try visiting sites by their IP, does http://64.233.167.99/ work? (one of Google's IPs)

What is inside your /etc/resolv.conf?
Try putting the following in your /etc/resolv.conf:

	nameserver 208.67.222.222
	nameserver 208.67.220.220

and see if it makes a difference.

3. The output of different commands are:
# ifconfig

inet addr:192.168.0.105 Bcast:192.168.0.255 Mask: 255.255.255.0

looks like route is missing a gateway, u should have another line there like this:

default	192.168.0.1	255.255.255.0	UG	0	0	0	eth0

make sure your /etc/network/interfaces has only this for eth0:

	allow-hotplug eth0
	iface eth0 inet dhcp
