I think that there may be a similar issue with the Gnome desktop.

>From the Etch main menu in the top panel:

Desktop -> Preferences -> Sound

In the Sound Preferences window choose the "Sounds" tab and disable "Enable
software sound mixing (ESD)"

No Gnome system sounds now work, but Gnome will not interfere with sound in apps.
