Yes, install wmctrl. It allows you to automate desktop switching and the placing of applications on desktops. For example, you might do something like this:
#!/bin/sh kmail & firefox & sleep 5s wmctrl -r kmail -t 0 wmctrl -r firefox -t 1 I hope this helps.
