VPN notification

I'd like to use my Linux (Debian Etch)-laden laptop in my frequent hot-spotting, but one thing is standing in my way.

Some of the hotspots that I use have no provisions for wireless security. This is not a major problem, though, because my ISP runs a VPN server, through which I can tunnel my session. Works very well through both Windows XP (using Cicso VPN client) and Debian (using VPNC).

The problem is this... When using Windows, the Cisco VPN client notifies me, with a popup dialog, if the VPN connection drops. But I can't figure out how to get VPNC, under Linux, to be so informative. So my worry is that I could lose my VPN connection, falling back to an unsecure hotspot connection, and not realize it.

There may be some way I could monitor some port, or IP address, and somehow finesse this, but my knowledge is just not up to the task. I've tried to coax kvnc into service, but it doesn't seem to have the ability to notify on a dropped connection.

Any suggestions? All help much appreciated.

Jeff
