Hi there,

I took a course that required MATLAB. For almost all of the homework assignments, octave did the job. It is much better to use and actually a lot quicker than matlab.

However, if you require some specific MATLAB packages such as their bioinformatics toolbox then you will have no choice but to purchase matlab.
