/etc/X11/xorg.conf

every time I do a kernel update, I have to redo my nvidia driver. To get the 
system working I use the DEFAULT driver( for my nvidia card), "nv" but I 
think you could select vesa...

look under /etc/X11 and see how many xorg.conf files you have.. there should 
be a backup.
