I've seen that symptom before on Windows, but not Linux.

OOo is pretty complex, though, and stuffed with Java.  Maybe it's
got to do DNS lookups for some reason.

If you re-open the document, does it exhibit the same behavior?  If
so, it would be interesting to run it with strace.
