Yeah the CRC errors looked weird. The DVD isn't scratched badly. And it also plays fine on a regular dvd player. So yeah I'm not sure what could be the issue.
I was going to try out kaffeine and checked out its dependencies...it uses xine as the backend so I tried installing xine and using that to play dvds. No luck...still didn't work.
Also I checked out /var/log/messages and these lines seem to be suspect:
