GPG differs only with command syntax, not structure.
What I tell people is that PGP (GPG) uses an encryption system with
two keys. It's like a door, locked on both sides. You need one key to
go one way through the door, the other key to go the other way.
So if I use your public key, you have to use your private key to get
the original text back. This is "normal" encryption.
If you use your private key, I can use your public key to get the
original text. This is "signing".
Everything else is combinations of the two.
