I'll check out the Gatos site, thanks.

I do have it working in sarge with xfree86 .. 4.3.0 I think.  Had to get
some add-on from a site .. retina something?  

I did a bit of research and testing since I wrote the above and it seems
you need to download the mach64 driver from the X.org cvs repository ..
not included in the regular package on account of its being "insecure".

And I do get a "mach64" driver/module not found when I start X on that
etch system. Seems to confirm that that's where the problem is.

It would still help if someone could confirm they got it to work .. if
it's not doable, I'd rather spend the time on something more useful.
