I have a cron job that does a mysqldump daily, and it emailed me the 
following error this morning - but again, I think this is just because the 
server is not running:

mysqldump: Got error: 2002: Can't connect to local MySQL server through 
socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' (2) when trying to connect
