Filtering is a very practical solution. However, the problem with filtering,
as I am sure you are already aware of, is that you have already incurred
the cost of spam (CPU time spent on filtering, bandwidth used etc.,). I
think the correct solution to spam is to look at the root cause of it.
Spammers send spam emails because they make money out of it. They make
money by advertising their spammed websites (well, most of the spam
emails). If we are able to shutdown these spammy websites then at least
that would reduce the amount of spam hovering over the internet. So far, I
have seen two successful projects doing this - knujon[1],
complainterator[2].
