Others may point out open source alternatives. In the mean time, How 
about google reader? Just log in and leave it open. It checks for updated 
results at frequent intervals (the interval is not configurable and AFAIK 
there is no option to disable it also).

I dont think this is possible in google reader.

In the above, I am referring to iceweasel (on sid). The behaviour might 
be different on other browsers.
