Yes, the device should have been /dev/sdd.

Yes, I was tired. Here's the right device:
$ df /media/usb-key
Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on
/dev/sdd1 499440 303916 195524 61% /media/usb-key

Yes. I inadvertantly ran the df on the wrong device, a usb mass
storagwe deveice. My usb-key is definitely /dev/sdd, and it has one
partition, sdd1.
