You should disable use of bitmap fonts by running:

dpkg-reconfigure -plow fontconfig-config

I really don't know why this isn't off by default.

You may need to disable XAA offscreen acceleration.

Option "XAANoOffscreenPixmaps"

in your xorg.conf "Device" section.
