how to isolate kernel panic problem

Hi, I've been running custom kernels from:

deb http://kernel-archive.buildserver.net/debian-kernel trunk main
deb-src http://kernel-archive.buildserver.net/debian-kernel trunk main

and over the last couple of latest snapshot releases of kernel 
2.6.23-rc5 had the dreaded "capslock and numlock flashing" type of 
kernel panic - i.e. nothing on the machine is responsive.

I've gone back to 2.6.23-rc4 for now, but wonder if there is a good 
guide for narrowing down the cause of the problem or even a more 
specific mailing list for debugging kernel panics.
