In order to find out whether all packages were upgraded to Debian Etch, you can use my apt-show-version grep examples, but when aptitude upgrade doesn't want to upgrade any packages and does not hold any packages back, you are on Debian Etch since you have "stable" in your /etc/apt/sources.list. It need to access a running X server and KDE I think. I did not look closer at kdat, but if it does not have a command line mode it will need a way to display its GUI.
