Ping my modem........

Never having used ping, and not really understanding the man page for it:-

When I ping my modem: 

what command/option/s should I use?
Is the following a normal reply from a satellite modem to ping:-

ping: sendmsg: Operation not permitted
ping: sendmsg: Operation not permitted
ping: sendmsg: Operation not permitted
ping: sendmsg: Operation not permitted
ping: sendmsg: Operation not permitted
