The 0x was added by the new version, the non 0x was inserted by the
previous version.

I have just rebooted with the 2.6.21-2 kernel, on the k7, and it
is still showing this odd stuff in dmesg.

dmesg |grep eth
eth0: RealTek RTL8139 at 0xdc00, 00:48:54:d1:35:1c, IRQ 11
eth0:  Identified 8139 chip type 'RTL-8139C'
udev: renamed network interface eth0 to eth2
eth2: link up, 10Mbps, half-duplex, lpa 0x0000
eth2: no IPv6 routers present

I will try your suggestion next.
