I had exactly the same problem a couple of days ago. I was surprised to
find out that the /usr/share/zoneinfo/ mplah mplah file which defines my
timezone was damaged (don't know how...). I replaced it and all was fine
again...
So, my suggestion, try to reinstall tzdata...
Ok, i've got this change pencilled in for tonight.
Initially i'm going to perform a 'tzconfig', and re-commit the settings.
If that doesn't work: 'apt-get install --reinstall tzdata'.
Does this look acceptable? Or did you have to manually replace a binary
file in /usr/share/zoneinfo?
All the best,
