outgoing mail: "From isn't in return path"
In one of the messages I sent to this list, the following line showed up:
X-SpamDetect: **: 2.099000 From isn't in return path=1.1,From: ends in
numbers=1.0
I'm wondering if this is a problem and how to fix it.
Here is how I'm handling mail:
This Gmail address I the only one I use, though my local address will
accept mail (DNS redirection). I use getmail to grab the mail via
POP3 from Gmail.
Outbound mail is delivered using the Postfix sendmail, through my
ISP's relayhost.
The trick is that I want my mail's "From" header to contain my Gmail
address rather than my redirection name, to avoid confusion, to not
get emails sent to the local address, and so closed mailing list
posting works without subscribing both addresses.
I accomplished this, it seemed, with mutt's "from" parameter set to
the Gmail address, which changed the "From" header to the Gmail
address. Posting to closed mailing lists worked too.
But then I posted a question to this list [1] and got no response.
Okay... Then I noticed the X-SpamDetect header (from the relayhost?)
mentioned earlier.
I got rid of that, then, using mutt's "envelope_from_address"
parameter set to the Gmail address.
And posted again [2], with no response. Okay, maybe nobody here likes
me... or my questions are too hard?! :)
I tried using Gmail's alternate identity feature and noticed a
"Sender" header added, so I added that to mutt. But I really would
like to know what the right way is to do this so that my mail isn't
getting dropped somewhere, if in fact that is happening.
I'm sending this message using Gmail's web interface.
Thanks!
Here are the two messages I sent. Let me know if you want all the headers.
