okay, no you're right... the booting is fine so long as you have an
mbr... its the mbr that's the trick. 

so to the OP, you have to get yourself into a bootloader somehow and
unless you actually install the bootloader onto each disk, then no,
you can't just boot up any one disk from a raid1 array. There are
other ways to get to a bootloader though: a grub floppy or cd for
example, or you can just manually install grub to each drive.
