http://packages.qa.debian.org/c/checkinstall/news/20060204T220817Z.html
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=281823

I can't say I really understand the process. Apparently the bug was
filed with 'severity: critical', but later downgraded to 'normal'. It
was nevertheless removed from testing in Feb. 2006. A fixed version
appeared in Dec., but for some reason didn't migrate to testing until
Mar. 2007, which I suppose was after the Etch freeze.
