I haven't heard of anything like that. I have used Fluxbox on an old IBM laptop
with a Celeron (Pentium II) and it works fine.

I suggest installing Fluxbox and trying it. The worst that would happen is
Fluxbox might crash and you might need to restart and then select your
old GUI at the login screen. I really doubt there will be any problems, though.
