Why don't you follow the first advice then and run the command in $HOME/.vim/doc?
Because it does not work ... Anyway, I faked the proposed installation by using symlink to vim-script .vim file, *then* go into $HOME/.vim/doc and run the :helptags . commands. After doing the symlink everything seems to be working fine. -- Mathieu
