I have had cases myself where the KDE printer scan came up empty but it
nevertheless worked to select "SMB" and to put in the correct username
and password (for the windows print "server"), the server and the
printer name in the KDE dialogs. If I remember correctly, you have to
use the server name without the leading "//" (or "\\" as Windows has
it).
The printer is connected to the desktop via a USB cable and the
port number that is assigned to the printer in XP is USB001
(virtual port). Could this be the root of the problem? I am not
even sure I will be able to print to the printer, but at this
point, I can't even see the printer. I have also opened up port
9100 on my firewall just in case, but that didn't work either, so
I removed it.
Any additional help would be appreciated.
If what I have posted above does not get you going then you should try
to run
smbclient -U <user> -L <server>
to see if you can "talk" to the XP machine at all. This command should
list all available services, e.g. shared folders, exported printers,
etc. (You will be prompted for a password if the server requires one.
<server> can be specified with or without the leading "//".)
