Re: rampant offtopic and offensive posts to debian-user
I think it a little strange that people are calling on the list masters to
monitor a list that is declared as non moderated, and has a Usenet
component. Just how exactly are you going to stop people from posting
from Usenet?
Some people have listed various names, and addresses for inclusion in this
type of censorship. Usenet and mailing lists already have devices for
this type of thing called kill files. I would suggest you try this method
as it seems to work for a lot of people. The singling out of people in my
book is a clear violaton of the rules of conduct, regardless of past
posts. Especially in other threads and other venues people have taught
tolerance and acceptance, but in this one situation where following ones
own advice would be advocated.
What part of Usenet don't you understand, referring to people using this
list or Newgroup as a personal playing field is unfounded. Every person
who posts on topic or off is using it as his or her own playing field.
The act of posting is using the list or in some terms used as a playing
field. This whole thread could be determined to be a playing field to
spread propaganda about the elitist way to behave on a mailing
list/Newsgroup.
Whats stopping people from starting a moderated Newsgroup with a charter
that you want. If this list is so off topic, and useless as many suggest
then by all means take your ball and start a moderated Newsgroup where
you can practice your censorship to your hearts content. Singling out 6
or 12 people for censorship on a non moderated list, just to keep the
traffic down seems to be a childish thing to do.
