If you are in Australia, then you would be using Bigpond, or hopefully 
Optus cable.

For telstra connections, use a package called bpalogin. If you have 
optus, then just plug in your cat5 cable, and have the interface set to 
DHCP and it will *just* work, as the modem connects to the ISP for you.
