To follow-up, the Nvidia driver direct from nvidia.com does work.

I had to pull the google-earth package builder from Sid for it to run 
against the newest Google binary, but it still cannot find libraries 
that I find easily in /usr/lib. More fun and games.

I also just discovered debian-amd64@lists.debian.org is no longer just 
a development list, where I will continue any further questions. The 
lack of "-user-" in its name prevented me from finding it when 
looking for a forum to post my troubles in at first. :^)
