Correction:
    $ dpkg -S usr/bin/\\\[
    coreutils: /usr/bin/[
    coreutils: /usr/share/man/man1/[.1.gz

Cause: dpkg takes a search pattern, not a file name. Hence
'[' is a special character for dpkg itself. From dpkg(1):
    dpkg -S | --search filename-search-pattern ...
                  Search for a filename from installed packages.
