It seems your internet connection was not functional during the install.
Is it functional now? If yes you need to add this (exactly):

deb http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ etch main contrib

to the file /etc/apt/sources.list. After start synaptic again, click on
"Reload" and try again with what you were doing.
