Canon camera problem (2)

This is driving me nuts by now. My Canon USB camera (Powershot
A420) is not recognised by gtkam.

It has worked for many months, and then it stopped working, maybe
as a result of a Sid upgrade. I put a message on this list about
it (April 19).

Then I found what I thought was the solution: to run as root
update-usbids. I put this on the list also (April 20).

But.. this joy lasted only for a short while. Now gtkam again does
not work, and update-usbids does not do anything (I now wonder if
it ever did anything, and gtkam's revival was caused by something
else). The camera is somehow recognised by the computer; lsusb says

Bus 003 Device 017: ID 04a9:310f Canon, Inc.

And less /proc/bus/usb/devices says

T: Bus=03 Lev=01 Prnt=01 Port=01 Cnt=01 Dev#= 17 Spd=12 MxCh= 0
D: Ver= 1.10 Cls=00(>ifc ) Sub=00 Prot=00 MxPS= 8 #Cfgs= 1
P: Vendor=04a9 ProdID=310f Rev= 0.01
S: Manufacturer=Canon Inc.
S: Product=Canon Digital Camera
C:* #Ifs= 1 Cfg#= 1 Atr=c0 MxPwr= 2mA
I: If#= 0 Alt= 0 #EPs= 3 Cls=06(still) Sub=01 Prot=01 Driver=(none)
E: Ad=01(O) Atr=02(Bulk) MxPS= 64 Ivl=0ms
E: Ad=82(I) Atr=02(Bulk) MxPS= 64 Ivl=0ms
E: Ad=83(I) Atr=03(Int.) MxPS= 8 Ivl=96ms

However, gtkam does not recognise the camera. A message (at the
bottom of the gtkam window) says "Loading camera drivers from
'/usr/lib/libgphoto2/2.3.1'..". gtkam then just hangs for about 10
seconds and then says "Could not list folders in '/'. PTP I/O error".

As I said, this is driving me nuts, especially because it really
used to work until quite recently. I am a member of the group
plugdev; anyway it also does not work if I am root. Anything else
I could try?

Regards, Jan
