advice on bug report

I used aptitude to install mondo (etch) on a new install:

aptitude install mondo

The dependent package mindi was installed and the recommended package kernel-image-2.6-amd64 was installed automatically. When this was installed, lilo was run and /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.18-amd64 was linked to /vmlinuz and /boot/initrd.img-2.6.18-amd64 was linked to /initrd.img.

This was a problem because my machine is a PIV. It was easily fixed with the rescue function on the Debian net-install cdrom, but I think that if Linux/kernel images should be in suggested not recommended if the default behavior of aptitude is to install them. Otherwise, this could cause unnecessary grief for less experienced users (such as those who have never rolled their own kernels, and so are not familiar with the booting process).

Yours sincerely,

Neil Katz
