Hmmm, I see now where our systems differ.

I'd been using linux-source-2.6.18 for the longest time but then
decided that I wanted a current kernel so grabbed vanilla 2.6.20.2
before linux-source-2.6.20 was created.

Also, I always use the vanilla nvidia driver even when using a
Debian kernel source tree.
