Thanks. But I don't fully understand this -- what should I put into e.g. /etc/modutils/alsa ? I tried it with

# ALSA portion

# only the next line is written by myself:

# OSS/Free portion

alias sound-service-0-8 snd-seq-oss
alias sound-service-0-12 snd-pcm-oss

Then modprobe snd-es18xx results in

reset at 0x220 failed!!!
es18xx: [0x220] ESS chip not found
pnp: Device 01:01.00 disabled.
pnp: Device 01:01.01 disabled.
ESS AudioDrive ES18xx soundcard not found or device busy
FATAL: Error inserting snd_es18xx (/lib/modules/2.6.18-4-686/kernel/sound/isa/sn
d-es18xx.ko): No such device
FATAL: Error running install command for snd_es18xx

Any further help is appreciated
