ESS ES1868 sound card not working after update to Etch

That is, it doesn't work with kernel 2.6.18-4-686, but booting the old kernel 2.6.8-2-686 from Sarge gets sound working.

Booting into 2.6.18 gives:

While the old 2.6.8 kernel has:

ESS chip ES1868 detected

alsaconf does find some soundcards, but configuring them doesn't work either.

Any pointers what do to here?
