It is a realy good question!

It depends, but it can be like here @me. Since I need functions
of partitioning of tables I need PostgreSQL 8.2!
But the upgrade was realy cool! -- Not a singel problem with
the upgrade from 7.4 from Sarge to 8.2.
But my own Workstations and my Customers running Clients based
on 7.4 Which gaved us the hell! I had to build and install
backports on ALL Sarge machines!

psql 8.1 will wok with a PostgreSQL 7.4 but not contraire.
